Uncategorized Recent Developments on Supreme Court Judgments in Nigeria

November 22, 2025

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has recorded a notable increase in judicial output in the 2024/2025 legal year, reflecting an intensified effort to reduce longstanding backlogs and strengthen the efficiency of the apex court. According to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Court delivered **369 judgments** within the period under review — a marked improvement from the **247 judgments** issued in the preceding legal year. This represents an impressive **49% rise** in the Court’s overall productivity.

The CJN attributed this improved performance to deliberate reforms targeted at modernising judicial processes. These reforms include enhanced digital filing systems, better case-tracking mechanisms, and more streamlined administrative procedures. The Court has also continued to invest in the welfare and stability of judicial and support staff, an approach that has contributed to a more conducive environment for effective adjudication.

This development is particularly significant in view of the increasing volume of complex constitutional, electoral, commercial, and human-rights related matters reaching the Supreme Court. With the rising demand for timely and authoritative pronouncements from the apex court, the improved rate of judgment delivery signals a positive shift in judicial responsiveness and institutional capacity.

Overall, the recent surge in the Supreme Court’s output demonstrates a renewed commitment to strengthening the administration of justice, promoting public confidence in the judiciary, and ensuring that the Court remains effective in discharging its constitutional mandate.
